“Tom The Leopard Man”
Elvia Iannaccone Gezlev was born in 1968, in Avellino, and grew up in Milano, Italy. Because of her passion for traveling, photography and subcultures she landed a job as a staff photographer for the first italian tattoo magazine called Tattoo Revue (Tattoo Planet in USA). Her collaboration starting in the 90’s lasted almost a decade. During that time she traveled to European and American tattoo conventions where she met, interviewed, and photographed many people in the industry. Some of those vintage photos and others more contemporary, are now published in her book My Tattoo World which is a collection of images taken by photographer Elvia Iannaccone Gezlev. This book includes photos of tattoos and tattooed people (tattoo artists, personalities, and musicians) from her archives. The portraits, close ups, and nudes were taken during tattoo conventions or intimate photoshoots. These were mostly shot while the author was working with an international tattoo magazine. The vast majority of the images were captured before the social medias took our lives by storm, when it wasn't so easy to see heavily tattooed people or to see artists at work as there were only few specialized magazines and tattoo conventions. It was a look at the tattooed people who were (and / or still are) part of the international tattoo scene, a small contribution to the tattoo community and to the craft that today has become more and more popular worldwide today. It is a way of keeping the memory of what it was and what nowadays has become the huge universe of tattooing. Today she lives in Staten Island, NY, she is also a tattoo artist and a mother of three. She continues her collaboration with online tattoo blogs like TattooLife.com and Femaletattooers.com, while interviewing and photographing female tattoo artists for her project Ladies of Tattooing (available on Blurb.com). She also curates the international art show Ladies Ladies Art Show (@ladiesladiesartshow ) focusing again on female tattoo artists and their fine art. A selection of her work was displayed at Senaspace Tattoo and Gallery, in NYC, at MF gallery in Brooklyn and recently at Pittan Tattoo in Milan, in April 2019.
